Personality: Maya's a serious young woman, ever since she was a baby she'd always had a thoughtful frown across her face. That doesn't mean she's not open to fun and laughter, but she's always put her family's needs above her own. She's stubborn and stern, but loyal and fair and she'll do anything for those she loves.

History:
From the day she was born, Maya had been appraising and investigating everything around her. She always wanted to be a part of things. She would follow her big brother around, learning what he learned, giggling at his antics. When she got older, her brother would take her to RONGO (1), with the other children and they would listen to his stories about the undead curse that once almost destroyed the island.

But they were just stories, right?

During high school, Maya dreamed of leaving the island. She wanted to travel the world and study varied and wonderful things. But when she started working at the restaurant her parents owned, she new that dream would not come true. Though she was sure they would tell her to go, Maya could clearly see the strain that running a tourist-reliant business was. Sure, peak holiday season, the money was easy. Tourists were always excited for the weekly hangi. But off season was more difficult. They usually closed for most of it, using profits from peak season to keep the bills paid.

It wasn't all bad though. Off season was when Tane would take his children hunting. When the settlers first came, they'd brought with them boar and dear and possums. And when they'd fled following the initial undead scourge - so the stories said - those populations of animals grew and ran wild. The Kahus would trek to the uninhabited places of the island and return home with hunted game to cook for dinner.

But now it's all over. Tane and Mahuika's business trip was supposed to be a short one. It was peak season after all, and the restaurant needed all hands on deck... but with the dead risen, it didn't seem likely that any planes would be landing back in Hokitika airport. And would Maya and her brother ever escape? Would they ever see their parents again?
