;; THE PLOT ;;
Many years ago, the island of mōrearea was a place of wilderness and savagery. At least that was how the European settlers saw it. When they arrived they found the natives lacked proper clothing and decent medical care, though they certainly knew all the best places to hunt. Knowing of the less than pleasant ways the neighbouring islands of New Zealand were being settled, these settler tried a different approach. They offered churches and medical facilities and trading items in exchange for a peaceful settlement. Though naturally a warrior people, the natives couldn't pass up what the settlers were offering. They agreed and they all lived together quite peacefully for a number of years.
Until one day, the island citizens began to get sick. Very sick. Taken slowly and painfully by a slow burning fever. But they didn't stay dead. Not long after passing, the victim's corpse would reanimate, some slow moving, some with terrifying speed or size, and some with gross deformities. The corpses started trying to eat the rest of the island, their bites spreading the sickness. It took every survivor on the island, native and european alike working together to fight back the ranks of the undead, finally the managed to force them below the church, sealing them below. Hoping that the ground and the might of god would keep the undead menace at bay. After that most of the settlers returned to the homeland. The natives went back to their business. A prison and an asylum were built on the island and for decades that was all the island was used for.
When many years later, the prison and asylum were abandoned, and the sickness had not made a re-appearance, settlers began to return to the island. By the mid 20th century, mōrearea was an island full of life. It's beauty re-realised a wealthy business man bought a large portion of the island and built a holiday resort. Over the years it has been renovated and refurbished until it became one of the most popular, state-of-the art holiday resorts in the world. These days the story of the undead is just a myth and used as an advertisment technique to get younger, more morbid patrons.
Of course the actual church, and most of the area around it, including the prison and the asylum, is out of bounds to all visitors. Too many liability issues there. But, it was only a matter of time before a couple of younger, more morbid patrons would break the rules, stumble into the church and release the undead plague upon the island again...
