History:
Leonardo Acevedo, or Leo as he was known by nearly everyone was born in Mexico City to Alejandra and Esteban Acevedo. His mother was a professor and his father a uniform officer for the Secretaría de Seguridad Pública del Distrito Federal. When he was 4 years old his mother was killed in a car accident, his father never remarried and choose to raise Leo alone. Esteban did the best job he could have being a single parent, he insured Leo was raised with a good education and knew both Spanish and English, and did his best to keep his son on the right path, the path his mother would have been proud of him for. Following in his father’s footsteps Leo became an officer, though he worked as a plain clothes detective serving under the Procuraduría General de Justicia del Distrito Federal. Leo served on a special task force which worked to investigate police corruption and the Mexican drug cartel.
He married his now ex-wife Maria at an extremely young age and they had their daughter Fiona before either of them had reached the age of 20. The marriage was toxic and try as they might for their daughter it was never going to work. Leo worked too much, and Maria slept around too much. Fiona was a sweet young girl who adored her father and her mother not knowing anything about their issues. By the time Fiona turned 7 years old Leo and Maria were divorced, no longer being able to stomach the marriage.
During his time working for the Procuraduría General de Justicia del Distrito Federal Leo had made his fair share of enemies, people tending to not be fans when they were busted for drugs or police corruption. Maria claimed she did not feel safe in Mexico City and that she would move to California in order to make a better life for Fiona and herself. It of course helped that her sleazy new fiance (whom Leo would have sworn hadn’t let the ink dry on the divorce papers before claiming her) was looking to establish himself as a director of Lord only knew what in Hollywood.
Unable to stand the idea of not seeing Fiona and having Maria and her Sleaze of the Week take full custody of his daughter Leo transferred to the drug prevention division of the LAPD. He was a vital member of the force being able to offer up information on the cartels he had investigated and assisted shutting down while in Mexico. Many of the cartels even had their hands as far out of Mexico to infiltrate the streets of LA.
Leo and his partner Enzo Concepcion worked some of the dirtier drug cases but they worked well together and Leo had quickly fallen into a rather comfortable life in LA. He saw Fiona more than he had expected Maria would let him, but it turned out she would rather spend her time with a man instead of her daughter which was fine by Leo as he loved his daughter more than anything else in the world.
Leo and Enzo had attracted unwanted attention, attention that was sick of the cops sticking their nose into issues that did not concern them. The cartel wanted solitary hold of the drug market in LA and the neighboring areas and Leo and Enzo had made that damn near impossible. Therefore the problems needed to be eradicated.
They were missing for 3 weeks. Held prisoners and inflicted with some of the worst torture imaginable. It was after 3 weeks that the cartel realized that they would get no assistance from the 2 cops and decided it would be easier to kill them than to continue to waste time.
And so they did, or at least they thought they did.
Leo and Enzo had been chained to a cold steel wall and shot several times (firing squad style) before their bodies were discarded in a ditch outside of the city. He had lost 6 pints of blood and been shot 5 times; 3 times in the abdomen, 1 in the chest, and another just below his collarbone. He was in surgery for 9 hours and by the grace of god he somehow managed to survive. Enzo did not.
Fiona was at her father’s side during the entire ordeal, even Maria had managed to show up a time or two.
He healed at least physically and was able to be discharged from the hospital. But the physical wounds turned out not to be the worst. Leo had experienced tortures that he would not tell a soul about, not even to the staff psychiatrist who had tried her damndest to get through to him and help him heal. He had been stripped clean down to his core and in response Leo had clammed up tighter than Fort Knox. He quickly became a prisoner in his own mind, at times not getting out of bed for days, not even speaking to Fiona. He was a shell of the man he had been, his eyes were dull, and his fire had seemed snuffed out.
There was a gorgeous resort in Mōrearea, one that the department was willing to pay for Leo to go to for a few weeks in order to clear his head and heal both physically and mentally from his ordeal. He hadn’t wanted to go, had no grand desire to go but the chief had made it abundantly clear that either he go or he would be let go.
So he went.
It had actually been nice, the island was indeed gorgeous and the air seemed to offer a touch of peace. He hadn’t spent much time socializing, he was rather content on his own trying to sort out what to do next and how. He wasn’t getting better, not mentally anyways, he felt as if the wounds he had suffered on the inside were too deep to heal, no matter how much medicine they tried to put him on.
He had just decided on swallowing a bullet when the undead came knocking.
